Who can apply for a TFN

A Tax File Number (TFN) is an individual or organizational identification number issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Your TFN remains consistent even if you relocate to a different state or country, undergo a name change, or switch employment positions.

Requirements for Australian citizens with an Australia passport

(Application with myGovID beta):

  •  You must be 15 years old or older

  • You must have an Australian passport

  • be an Australian citizen

  • Have at least one Australian identity document like a driver license.

  • You will also need to set up a Strong myGovID.

Requirements for Australian residents.

  • No age requirement for apply
  • Be an Australian resident, citizen or Australian resident for tax purposes.

How to apply? 

You have 3 different ways to apply

Requirements People living outside Australia

You should apply for a TFN if you: 

  1. You earn income in Australia from sources other than interest, dividends, or royalty payments, such as rental income.
  2. You have income from Australian business interests.
    1. Your spouse is an Australian resident and is applying for family tax benefits or child care subsidies.
    2. You are a member of an Australian superannuation fund that:

    3. You need to file an Australian tax return or request an Australian Business Number (ABN).

Requirements for Norfolk Island residents, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people:

If you reside on Norfolk Island or if you are an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person, you have the option to apply for a TFN at any age.

Australian residents of any age can request a TFN, and the application is free of charge. You can utilize the online application method using:

  • myGovID if you are an Australian citizen aged 15 or older and possess an Australian passport.
  • Australia Post if you can attend an interview and provide your identity documents.
  • In the event that you do not possess sufficient identity documents for alternative application processes, you will be required to apply by mail.
