Everyone gets their TFN from the same place — the Australian Taxation Office — and it's always free. What changes is the route and what you need. Here's a quick guide by situation.
First time in Australia on a visa
If your visa lets you work and you're in Australia, apply online on the ATO website with your passport. Your TFN is posted to your Australian address; allow up to 28 days. Full steps: how to apply for a TFN.
Temporary residents
Temporary visa holders need work rights to use the online application. Check your conditions on VEVO first. If your visa doesn't allow work, you generally don't need a TFN for employment.
Already working without a TFN
Apply now and tell your employer. You have 28 days to provide your TFN; after that, your employer must withhold tax at the highest rate. If too much tax was withheld, you can get it back when you lodge your tax return.
International students
Student visa holders with work rights apply online like other visa holders. See our TFN guide for international students.
You've had a TFN before
Don't apply again — you keep the same TFN for life. Find it on your old documents or through myGov: see where to find your TFN.
Getting it right first time
Most delays come from details that don't match your passport, incomplete addresses or duplicate applications. Check every field before submitting.
Applying directly with the ATO is free. Our optional TFN application service (99–199 AUD) prepares and checks your application for you. Neither route is faster than the ATO's processing time.
