Where can I find my TFN? How to recover a lost Tax File Number

Your TFN stays with you for life, so if you've had one before, don't apply for a new one — find the one you have. Here's where to look.

1. Check your documents

Notice of assessment from a previous tax return
Tax returns you lodged yourself or through a tax agent
Letters from the ATO, including the original TFN letter
Super statements, which sometimes show it in your account details
Old payment summaries (some employers showed the TFN, often partly masked)

2. Look in myGov

If your myGov account is linked to the ATO, sign in, open the ATO service and go to your personal details. Step-by-step instructions: how to find your TFN on myGov.

3. Ask your tax agent

If a registered tax agent has lodged returns for you, they will have your TFN on file.

4. Call the ATO

If you can't find it anywhere, call the ATO on 13 28 61 (individuals). You'll need to prove your identity, so have your personal details and documents ready. If you think your TFN has been lost, stolen or misused, contact the ATO's Client Identity Support Centre on 1800 467 033.

Keep it safe once you find it

Store it securely, not in an unprotected photo or note on your phone.
Only give it to employers, banks, super funds, the ATO and registered tax agents.
Never share it on social media or by text.
