myGov is the Australian Government's login for services such as the ATO, Medicare and Centrelink. Once your myGov account is linked to the ATO, you can see your Tax File Number in a couple of clicks.
Steps
- Sign in at my.gov.au.
- Select Australian Taxation Office from your linked services.
- In ATO online services, open your personal details (in the profile area).
- Your TFN is shown there.
If the ATO isn't linked yet
To link the ATO to myGov, you need to prove your identity with information only you and the ATO know — for example, details from a recent notice of assessment, your bank account, a payment summary or a super statement. If you've never lodged a tax return, you may need to call the ATO for a linking code.
Common problems
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| ATO not linked | Link it using the identity questions or a linking code from the ATO. |
| Locked out of myGov | Use the account recovery options on my.gov.au. |
| Details don't match | Your name or address may have changed — update them with the ATO by phone. |
| TFN not where expected | Look under personal or profile details, not under the tax return section. |
Can't use myGov?
Check your documents (notices of assessment, ATO letters, super statements) or call the ATO on 13 28 61. See where to find your TFN for every option.
Can I apply for a TFN through myGov?
Australian residents with a strong Digital ID can apply online. Visa holders apply through the ATO's online application once they're in Australia. See how to apply for a TFN.
