Short answer: if your online application is complete and correct, you often get your ABN as soon as you submit it. If the application is reviewed, it can take up to 20 business days. If it's refused, you'll receive a letter explaining why, usually within 14 days.
When you get an immediate outcome
- Your details match ATO records (name, date of birth, TFN).
- Your business activity is described clearly.
- You're clearly carrying on a business or enterprise.
When applications are reviewed
The ABR may need more information if it can't confirm your identity or isn't sure you're entitled — for example, if the activity description is vague or you appear to be an employee. Respond quickly to any request to avoid further delay.
If it's taking longer than 20 business days
Contact the Australian Business Register with your application reference number.
Can anyone speed it up?
No. Processing is done by the ABR. A private service can help you avoid the errors that cause reviews, but it can't make the government faster. Be wary of claims like "ABN in one hour guaranteed".
